Cooch Behar, the district headquarters of Cooch Behar District, is the gateway to the Northeast and Bhutan, sharing a long border with Bangladesh. Historically ruled by the Koch Kings and later the British, the town is renowned for its planned layout, developed since before 1885. Its early water supply system, street lighting, pucca drains, and wide roads reflect royal-era urban planning. The town is rich in heritage structures, including the Cooch Behar Palace, Victoria College, Jenkins School, Sunity Academy, Lansdowne Hall, Madan Mohan Temple, and many more. The magnificent Cooch Behar Palace (1879–1887), inspired by Italian and Venetian architecture, remains the prime attraction. Now maintained by the Archaeological Department, the palace draws thousands of tourists each year.
